Cable TV Leader Dan Bemis Takes The Reigns of IT Security Firm CentraComm To Lead Cable TV Industry Fight Against Denial-Of-Service Attacks Across Broadband Networks
Findlay, Ohio - October 6, 2009 - CentraComm President and Chief
Executive Officer, Daniel Bemis, is leading a new effort for cable
TV operators to address increasing distributed denial-of-service
(DDoS) attacks across their broadband networks. DDoS
perpetrators use malware to infiltrate and manipulate global
networks of computers into launching large scale, coordinated
attacks intended to saturate a target machine or website with
external communications requests, ultimately restricting or
preventing functionality. The most common cyber warfare tool
utilized today, DDoS attacks are a problem that is costly, vexing
and mission critical to all cable customers.
A seasoned telecommunications veteran with nearly 20 years of
sales, operations, business development and customer service
experience, Bemis understands the impact these online security
issues have for every consumer and content provider, especially the
cable broadband provider. While the cost of breaking into
computer systems and launching attacks is minimal, significant
expenditures are required to address the widespread collateral
damage left in the wake of DDoS events. Not only are the
websites and systems supporting the target negatively impacted, so
are the sources of the attack, the service providers on either side
of the attack, and non-targeted users of both the attacked site and
those service providers in the path of the attack.
New instances of massive DDoS assaults against popular online and
Web 2.0 destinations like Twitter, Facebook and Google are being
reported almost every day. CentraComm arms companies with the
security tools and round-the-clock global support needed to
prevent, minimize and manage exposure to IT network attacks and
intrusions by hackers. Although DDoS attacks may be
considered Security 101, companies are still not employing adequate
identification and remediation methods to address the issue.
This is further complicated by disparate systems now being operated
by single regional broadband providers.
In addition to wreaking havoc across their corporate and consumer
targets, DDoS attacks also heavily tax broadband providers who are
charged with closely monitoring their networks to identify DDoS
activity and report sources of intrusion. Under Bemis,
CentraComm intends to enlist MSOs in the fight to protect both
enterprise and residential customers from these security attacks,
while managing costs.
"Attacks on popular social networking and commercial websites via
botnets, malware and new viruses are becoming increasingly
common. CentraComm's comprehensive penetration testing,
forensic reviews, IT security products and highly skilled,
dedicated team of experts address the significant issues plaguing
broadband providers," said Bemis. "We are committed to delivering
the most robust security offerings available to companies and
industries at the forefront of the evolving online
landscape."
A seasoned telecommunications executive, Bemis previously served
as Senior Vice President of Customer Operations at Vonage, a VoIP
pioneer, where he helped the company grow to over $500 million in
annual revenue and enjoy more than 1.7 million customers.
Earlier, Bemis served as Corporate Vice President of Customer
Service with Adelphia Communications, overseeing a department of
3,600 employees and $140 million operating budget for the cable TV
company. He began his career at Continental Cablevision and before
moving to Media One where he held a variety of management
roles.
