The Toledo Blade is a regional news publication covering over 14 counties in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. The paper was first published on December 19, 1835 and is the oldest continuing business in the city of Toledo. ToledoBlade.com, the publication’s web site, was launched in 1997 and today is focused on being the premier source of news and information in the region.
In 2010, Toledo Blade’s network was infected by a virus that forced its IT department to re-image every employee’s PC, effectively shutting down the company’s publishing operations for two weeks. The IT team began putting together a new security plan, but with its print business being challenged to cut back, the company lacked the budget to invest in new hardware and software. In addition, the Toledo Blade made a strategic decision to transition away from its client/server computing model and move its entire publishing operation to the cloud. This was a radical departure from its old model, and would require an entirely new kind of IT security.
Toledo Blade’s IT team knew that the traditional model of appliance-based security was not going to work anymore, and that in order to secure its operations in the cloud, it would need a cloud-based security solution. On the recommendation of its IT partner, Centracomm, the Toledo Blade turned to Zscaler.
The Zscaler Difference
With the Zscaler Security Cloud, there was no hardware or software to deploy. “Since our move to the cloud, our capital expenditure is now almost non-existent,” says Malcolm Edge, Director of Information Systems. “In two years, we’ve reduced the company’s CapEx by 10-25%.” In addition, the IT department was able to reduce its payroll costs. In 2006, Edge had a team of 16, today he has ten employees in his department. “I was able to re-purpose people into other areas,” says Edge.
No Security Issues
Since it began using the Zscaler Security Cloud, Toledo Blade has enjoyed an unprecedented level of web security with no new incidents. “We’ve had no security issues since 2010, and Zscaler has played a big part in that. It has given us a level of security and comfort we had never had before,” says Edge.
Increased Visibility and Control
Using Zscaler’s real-time, consolidated reporting and analytics, Edge has new visibility and control over the company’s users and applications. “The Zscaler dashboard gives us a great deal of information we didn’t have before, including visibility into social media. The control we have over users and the ability to balance the need for access and security is worth any additional costs.”
